Police in American Samoa will be armed with guns for the first time

American Samoa police will be armed for the first time after recently receiving a shipment of 24 Glock 17 handguns. The decision, which was strongly encouraged by police commissioner William Haleck, will go into effect next year. Haleck has warned of increasing drug-related gun violence, pointing to the shooting of a police officer outside the High Court a few years ago.

American Samoa is a group of islands in the South Pacific with a population of roughly 55,000. It is a U.S. territory.
