WASHINGTON – Beginning this week Amtrak will step up security measures by randomly screening passengers’ carry-on bags as officers with automatic weapons and bomb-sniffing dogs patrol platforms. Amtrak is not upping security due to any recent threats, but officials feel that since the Madrid train bombings in 2004, enhancing security is a must-do especially when commuters are now taking trains to avoid security holdups at airports nationwide.
