The number of illegal immigrants arrested trying to cross the border from Mexico into Arizona has fallen by more than 40 per cent in the last year.
Although the figures have not been officially released, Alan Bersin, the commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, told agents that arrests in the Tucson Sector have fallen to to 123,000 – the lowest level since 1993.
At its peak in 2000, more than 616,000 illegals were arrested attempting to gain entry to the U.S. in the same sector.
Mr Bersin credits additional border agents, fencing and better air support for the fall and claims the figures show a remarkable turnaround.
