Cockpit-voice and flight-data recorders to be retrieved by investigators, of a UPS cargo plane that crashed in a field near Birmingham airport. Per a member of the National Transportation Safety Board they were waiting to retrieve the black boxes due to the tail of the aircraft still smoldering.
Robert L. Sumwalt added that an initial look indicated the pilots hadn’t made any distress calls. The NTSB had a team at the scene. The crash killed the two pilots on board and scattering wreckage over a wide rural area moments after witnesses heard the massive jet coming in at treetop level. People living near the airfield reported seeing flames coming from the aircraft and hearing its engines struggle in the final moments before impact.
