Officer Brian Groves, 30, was on patrol with his partner in the Seward Park Housing Development responding to a report of criminal activity in the stairwell of one of the buildings, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a news conference Thursday.

As Groves and his partner opened the door to the stairwell of the 22nd floor, he saw a man with a gun, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

Groves yelled out “gun” and the suspect took off, Kelly said. As the officers chased the suspect down four flights of stairs, the suspect turned and fired, hitting Groves in his bulletproof vest, Kelly said.
