Chinese military officials warned the United States against supporting Japan’s assertion over a group of disputed islands in the East China Sea, the Chinese Defense Ministry said on Friday.
Ties have been strained over the uninhabited islands—known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China—controlled by Japan but claimed by both countries.
Aircraft and ships from the two countries have played cat-and-mouse in the vicinity of the islands ever since the Japanese government bought three of the islands from a private owner, raising fears of conflict.
