LOS ANGELES– A recent political protest sparked debate over LAPD behavior and their use of riot gear during past demonstrations. Some critics even blame the officers for transforming peaceful marches into physical scuffles when they show up donning layers of full riot gear, believing that the “intimidation factor” leads to destructive behavior.
In an effort to curve these complaints, and possibly experiment with new security methods, the LAPD recently showed up to a pro-Palestinian demonstration sans riot helmets and face shields. As a result, an officer suffered an injury when he was struck in the head with a sign- an injury serious enough to need treatment at a hospital and easy enough to avoid with the use of a helmet. Now the world-class police force finds itself being ridiculed for changing their methods and putting officer safety in harms way.
