A war between Mexican drug gangs and police has escalated into open bloody conflict in Mexico, with residents in the northern border city of Juarez fearing an unparalleled bloodbath by the weekend.

So far this year, nearly 1,400 people have been murdered, an increase of more than 40% over the toll from the first five months of 2007, according to authorities.
