In February, Florida distributed more than 50,000 concealed weapons applications, which is the highest number it’s given out in a single month since 2001.
“Gun and ammunition sales are probably up 65 percent over the last three years,” said Kurt VanZeelane, who carries a concealed weapon.
To keep up with the demand, the state has streamlined the permitting process. For instance, gun owners can go to one of eight regional offices, like the one in Jacksonville, get fingerprinted and receive a permit within two weeks. In the mail, it could take up to a month.
But the problem for the thousands applying is the Jacksonville office says it can only physically process about 35 permits a day, and the next available in-house appointment is months away.
