NEW YORK – The ban that prohibits news organizations from photographing the homecomings of U.S. war dead has been lifted by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who has decided to leave the decision entirely up to the families. If “privacy concerns can be addressed, the more honor we can accord these fallen heroes, the better,” gates said earlier this month when he announced he was reviewing the ban.
