ONE of the biggest naval exercises in the Gulf began yesterday with 41 nations taking part.
The International Mine Countermeasures Exercise (IMCMEX) 13 will continue until May 30.
It reflects concerns both regionally and internationally that the Gulf, one of the world’s most important waterways, is vulnerable to mines – particularly following Iranian threats to block the Strait of Hormuz.
The exercise will include an array of operations designed to protect international commerce and trade; mine countermeasures; maritime security operations; and maritime infrastructure protection.
