The system of border checkpoints used by the Federal Government has greatly expanded a database on travelers who enter the country by collecting information on U.S. citizens crossing by land.  The collected data will be stored for 15 years and could aid investigators in criminal and intelligence investigations.  The system is also part of a larger effort to detect and guard against terrorist threats.
