A firefight broke out Tuesday in Jersey City with a police officer reportedly shot in the head. As of press time (3:20 p.m. EST), the scene at the Jersey City Shooting is still unfolding and details are scattered regarding the number of shooters.

Local police along with FBI and ATF agents responded to the scene, which is still very active. Dramatic footage hit social media almost immediately, as amateur video shows a wild scene. In one video, footage shows a massive stack of unknown NJ police moving down a city street. In another video, multiple gun shots echo through the town. You can watch some of those video toward the bottom of this post.

Response to Jersey City Shooting

A Newark ATF office tweeted agents responded to “reports of an active shooter,” according to cnn.com. CNN went on to report that New York PD’s Emergency Service Unit responded to the scene in Jersey City as well.

The shooting reportedly took place in the Martin Luther King Drive area of Jersey City, according to cnn.com. That area lies directly across the Hudson River from the island of Manhattan. Officials closed multiple roads and area schools remained on lockdown, according to cnn.com.

Though it’s clear there is a situation unfolding in New Jersey, most reports remain unconfirmed at this time. Reports include multiple shooters with “long guns,” a U-Haul van, and potentially even a bomb. Again, reports remain unconfirmed. But by the look of the police response in the video, the situation is serious. Footage shows more than a dozen officers carrying a mix of long guns and sidearms. It appears to be an immediate response by officers with constant shots ringing out in the background.

Officers Reportedly Wounded

The most recent report claims two officers were wounded in the firefight, with one shot in the head. The status of the wounded officer, or officers, remains unclear at this time.

“I have been briefed on the unfolding situation in Jersey City,” said New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, according to cnn.com.  “Our thoughts and prayers are with the men and women of the Jersey City Police Department, especially with the officers shot during this standoff, and with the residents and schoolchildren currently under lockdown. I have every confidence in our law enforcement professionals to ensure the safety of the community and resolve this situation. Today reminds us of their bravery and the sacrifices they, and their families, make for our communities.”
