Police officers in Franklinton, La. are now certified to carry assault rifles after completing a training course to familiarize themselves with the weapon.

Chief Donald Folse has confirmed that the Franklinton Police Department recently purchased some SIG Sauer .223 M400 rifles earlier this year. The training was led by the department’s firearms instructor, Maj. Justin Brown.

Prior to the certification, Franklinton police officers had been armed with pistols and shotguns, with one sniper rifle reserved for Brown, the department’s sniper.
