The City of Los Angeles Gun Buyback program will offer $100 and $200 gift certificates to people who turn in weapons this Saturday at several locations.
“This is designed to take guns off the streets,” Los Angeles Police Department Capt. Ivan Minsal told the San Fernando Valley Sun.
“If you have a firearm that you no longer use, maybe you no longer go to the shooting range or if your life has changed and you don’t have any need for that firearm, this is an easy way and the proper way to dispose of them.”
From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, those who turn in shotguns, handguns and rifles will get a $100 gift certificate from Ralphs Supermarket or Visa. People who turn in assault weapons will get a $200 gift certificate. The certificates will be handed out while supplies last, and authorities reserve the right to limit the number of weapons turned by an individual.
Last year, more than 2,500 weapons were turned in to the LAPD in a similar event, and in 2009, more than 1,700 weapons were turned in.
