Marine who lost his leg in Afghanistan became the first veteran in the state to receive a bionic lower leg Tuesday.

Retired Marine Corp. John Munoz-Ramirez said he can now jump and climb the stairs again, years after he stepped on an improvised explosive in Afghanistan in 2008.

“One of my buddies actually stepped on an IED behind us, and as we go and run to take cover, I stepped on a mine,” Munoz-Ramirez said.

The Marine, who lost his lower left leg and three fingers, was awarded with the Purple Heart in the hospital.

“I can’t feel sorry for myself, so (I) just keep on pushing,” Munoz-Ramirez said.
