Travel as far south as you can go on the Garden State Parkway and you’ll run into Middle Township, where local law enforcement officers will begin a body camera pilot program in the next month.

According to Press of Atlantic City:

Two officers on each patrol shift will wear the cameras on a rotating basis over the next 30 to 45 days. Then the department will determine whether to ask the township committee to outfit each officer with one through a capital request. The cameras are manufactured by Taser International, the department said.

Police Chief Christopher Leusner said that department began using dashboard cameras in police cruisers back in 2007, and the benefits had been “substantial.” In a statement, he said he hoped the body cameras would have similar results.

“We are committed to providing the best tools and training to our officers, in order to keep them and our residents protected,”Mayor Tim Donohue told Press of Atlantic City. “This pilot program will allow us to evaluate the practical application of these cameras and the pitfalls and challenges they may present.”
