Scientists at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) have developed a new lightweight sensor that has upgraded improvised explosive devices (IED) detection for military personnel.

The new lightweight and compact sensor is called Silicon Nanowires in a vertical array with a porous electrode (SiN-VAPOR).

The SiN-VAPOR sensor marks the first step in using trace chemical detection where IED detection is necessary.
