BELEN, New Mexico– Magistrate Daniel Hawkes brought his courtroom to Belen High School in hopes that the sentencing of alcohol-related crimes would show students the dangers of alcohol, especially in the weeks leading up to the prom and graduation. Justices and school officials want to see the program go statewide, where once a year New Mexico’s supreme court would conduct hearings and sentencing in a makeshift courtroom complete with the New Mexico Supreme Court seal and the U.S. and state flags in hopes to reinforce the dangers of drinking and driving and underage drinking.
