Tpr. Winston Martindale Jr., 40, was responding to the collision of two small airplanes in May 2011 when he fell on a piece of equipment, causing internal bleeding to his abdomen, state police said in a press release. Despite his injuries, he stayed at the crash scene for six hours, struggling with heavy wreckage to assist victims of the crash.
Martindale suffered through several serious medical procedures, and died on Wednesday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
