Retired homicide Detective James Leavelle, who was transporting Lee Harvey Oswald when Jack Ruby shot the accused assassin on November 24, 1963, is being honored by the Dallas Police Department for his years of steadfast service.
Leavelle had been investigating Oswald for the murder Officer J.D. Tippit, whom Oswald had shot and killed just 45 minutes after allegedly killing Kennedy. Tippit’s widow, Marie Tippit, was among those attending Tuesday’s ceremony.
