The Pentagon has started a program to recruit social scientists in efforts to direct the nation’s brainpower for combating security threats like the Chinese military, Iraq, terrorism and religious fundamentalism.

Defense Secretary Gates named the initiative Minerva after the Roman goddess of wisdom and warriors, hoping the program will provide the government with opportunities to pump up its intellectual capital.  Past attempts were similarly made during the cold war after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957.  For more details on this, click here and return back to comment.
