The Philippine Navy (PN) has announced plans to upgrade two ex-US Coast Guard Hamilton-class cutters.
The two vessels, which the PN will reportedly use as patrol frigates, will be upgraded for navigation, propulsion, communication, surveillance, and weapons systems. Contracts for the upgrades will be awarded next year.
PN spokesman Lieutenant Commander Gregory Fabic said the upgrades will enhance the PN’s ability to protect its assets amid territorial disputes between the Philippines and China.
