Residents in Texas apartment complexes have begun dedicating entire units to police officers so they have a place to rest, take a break, and fill out reports.
Since residents began opening these “cop shops,” they say they have noticed a significant drop in crime. In Hurst, Texas, police officer Santiago Sanchez said that calls for service at the Gables of Notting Hill apartment complex has been cut in half since the program was implemented in May.
“There has traditionally been a high number of calls for service there,” he said. “But that’s a big complex, also.”
Residents are also glad to have the officers around.
“It’s always nice to have a police car in the parking lot,” said Courtney Brown, the leasing and marketing manager of the Gables complex. “Sometimes it requires some explanation, but the residents seem to appreciate it.”
