A Maryland school district hired three retired law enforcement officials to serve as school safety officers for the upcoming school year.
The three officers — Steve Wininger, a 21-year-veteran of the Maryland State Police; Timothy Stevens, a 28-year-veteran from the Frostburg State University Police Department and Brian Hughes, a 24-year-state police veteran — will provide a security rotation to the Allegany County Public Schools.
The officers will wear a uniform and carry a concealed firearm. They will also be required to teach DARE, the school system’s drug awareness program.
