Russia President Dmitri A. Medvedev dismissed the military’s top general since 2004, Yuri N. Baluyevsky, and replaced him with Gen. Nikolai Makarov.  The dismissal was due to reports of conflict between military leaders and the civilian defense minister over spending and administrative priorities.

General Baluyevsky had been a strong critic of the United States, particularly of American plans to build a missile defense system in Eastern Europe.  For more details on this, click here and return back to comment.
