The Secret Service today released riveting, never-before-heard audio tapes of the dramatic moments after the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan on March 30, 1980.

The tapes were released in response to a public records request by Washington Post reporter Del Quinten Wilber for his book, Rawhide Down: The Near Assassination of Ronald Reagan.

Excerpts of the book will be published by The Wall Street Journal on Saturday.

Wilber, in his Post blog The Crime Scene, explains the unfolding events heard in the audio.

Moments after the shooting outside a Washington hotel, an agent is heard saying the presidential limousine is going back to the White House.
