Sheriff Joe Arpaio fired the second-highest-ranking official at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and another top aide Friday afternoon. Their terminations followed a six-month investigation into alleged misconduct at the MCSO.

The terminations of Chief Deputy David Hendershott and Deputy Chief Larry Black are effective May 5.

Allegations against them include mismanagement and campaign finance violations. A lengthy memo from another deputy prompted the investigation, which was conducted by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. The deputy accused Hendershott of using fear tactics, favoritism, and bullying to run his office.
