The annual Shop With A Cop program kicked off in West Virginia over the weekend, with over 100 children in Vienna and Parkersburg going Christmas shopping in local Wal-Marts with a uniformed police officer. The event is sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 79 in Wood County.

FOP Lodge 79 president Chris Morehead said the FOP gets annual donations for the Shop With A Cop program from Wal-Mart and other businesses, as well as a number of other charitable individuals and organizations. As a result of the program, at-need children get a $100 gift card that they use when they go shopping accompanied by a local police officer. 103 children participated this year.

“We’re just very happy to be able to be able to support and help with this project,” said Tracy Carpenter, store manager at the Vienna Wal-Mart.”I think it’s fantastic for the community and what the officers are doing, we’re just glad to be a part of it.”
