Less than one year after the U.S. Department of Justice selected the Tomball Police Department to take part in a public safety enhancement program, Tomball police will have the opportunity to research and evaluate the use of a new technologically-advance tool — a gyroplane.
The DOJ provided $40,000 in funding to Tomball PD as part of the Advancing Criminal Justice Policy, Practice, and Technology – Evaluation of Low-cost Aviation Options for Law Enforcement program.
Additional funding provided to Tomball PD allows pilot and tactical flight officer training for the newly-formed Air Support Unit.
Tomball PD will serve as the first U.S. law enforcement agency to use gyroplanes, although the aviation technology has been used in the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia. The Auto-Gyro MTOsport is manufactured in Germany to strict airworthiness standards in the three countries.
More than 1,000 MTOsport gyroplanes are in use throughout the world by military units, civil air patrol, and police agencies. The aircraft has an excellent safety record, but the Federal Aviation Administration has not yet created a specific manufactures category for gyroplanes to be produced in the U.S.
