After allowing the completion of a deal that send a number of F-16 fighters to Egypt, US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns met interim President Adly Mansour and Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawi in Cairo. It is not clear what was talked about, but Washington had said he would seek an end to violence and a transition to an new “civilian government”.

Mr Burns is the first top US official to visit Egypt since the army ousted President Mohammed Morsi on 3 July.
