Cambodia has postponed military cooperation programs with the U.S.

Lt. Gen. Nem Sowath, the senior officer in charge of political and foreign policy for the Defense Ministry, said that the military programs were postponed by mutual agreement because Cambodia was not prepared.  The programs have not been cancelled.

On Monday State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said that Cambodia had postponed or cancelled the programs with the U.S. and other countries.

At the same time, Human Rights Watch has been urging the U.S. to cut military ties with Cambodia, arguing that Southeast Asian country’s armed forces are corrupt and guilty of rights abuses.
