Since the beginning of 2011, 27 officers around the country have been killed by firearms or felonious assaults. This marks an increase of more than 13 percent over 2010. Among current DOJ initiatives to combat the problem:
-VALOR is a program that addresses Violence Against Law Enforcement and Ensuring Officer Resilience and Survivability.
-The Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP) provides reimbursement for law enforcement agencies that purchased vests that meet certain criteria. In 2011, vests purchased using BVP funds have already saved the lives of six law enforcement officers.
-A new Bureau of Justice Assistance law enforcement safety toolkit is currently in production. It will help federal, state, and local law enforcement leaders learn more about resources for training, deconfliction ser vices, and other assistance.
