The United States military could get an advantage on other militaries around the world with aircraft that can fly at hypersonic speeds, or those about 20-times the speed of sound, according to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
DARPA issued a press release this past week saying it has made advancements in hypersonic flight research and compared hypersonic flight to the breakthroughs in stealth technology the agency made in the 1970s.
“DoD”s hypersonic technology efforts have made significant advancements in our technical understanding of several critical areas including aerodynamics; aerothermal effects; and guidance, navigation and control, but additional unknowns exist,” said Acting DARPA Director, Kaigham J. Gabriel, in the release.
