Helus, a 29-year veteran of the department, was reportedly the first one to enter the Borderline Bar and Grill, where the shooting took place.
According to multiple reports, Helus immediately entered the bar upon hearing gunfire from outside. Police said Helus confronted the shooter, “but was shot and severely wounded. Civilians and other deputies pulled Sergeant Helus from the bar.”
Ventura Sheriff Geoff Dean confirmed that Helus died at the hospital.
Ron Helus Hailed as a Hero
Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day. Other members of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said Helus epitomized what it is to be an LEO.
“He’s absolutely a hero. … He epitomized what a cop does — he’s a cop’s cop,” Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Garo Kuredjian told CNN. “When he heard the gunfire, he ran in. He ran in and no doubt saved others from being victimized. … And that’s what cops do; that’s what he did.”
“He gave his all and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero because he went in to save lives, to save other people,” Dean said.
Dean said Helus was planning to retire in the next year. He is survived my his wife and son.
We, at Tactical-Life.com, offer our sincerest condolences to Helus’ family and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. He made the ultimate sacrifice when called upon. We will always remember him as the hero he was.
