Law enforcement’s love affair with the Sig Sauer P320 continues apace; the Virginia State Police just picked the gun as its official duty sidearm.

Virginia State Police Picks The P320

The Virginia State Police consists of three bureaus: Criminal Investigations, Field Operations and Administrative and Support Services. The agency has over 2,100 sworn personnel that serve the Commonwealth of Virginia.

“We are proud to earn the confidence of the Virginia State Police through their selection of the Sig Sauer P320 as their official duty pistol,” said Tom Jankiewicz, Sig’s executive vice president for law enforcement sales. “Due to the modularity of the P320 the Virginia State Police now have the ability to easily customize their standard issue firearm for grip preference, without ever compromising the superior Sig Sauer accuracy, reliability, and safety features they have come to rely on.”

The P320 comes in full-size, carry, compact and subcompact versions. A serialized trigger group makes it configurable to different caliber, size and grip options. Available in 9mm, .45 ACP, .40 S&W and .357 SIG, the P320 features a 3-point takedown which doesn’t require a trigger pull for disassembly. The gun is also the official sidearm of the U.S. Army. In addition, the Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard have all placed orders for the pistol.

Sig’s press release doesn’t say how many P320s the Virginia State Police ordered. It does, however, say that VSP troopers will start training with the gun—and eventually field it—in 2019. The current duty gun for the agency is the Sig P229 DAK in .357 SIG.

“It’s a tremendous honor for all of us here at Sig Sauer to be given the opportunity to provide the men and women of the Virginia State Police with this particular firearm. We look forward to continuing our relationship with this prestigious law enforcement agency and supporting their mission,” Jankiewicz added.

Law Enforcement Popularity

Like we said up top, the P320 is enormously popular amongst law enforcement agencies. Over the past month alone, the Chicago Police Department; Tampa Police Department; Jacksonville Police Department in Arkansas; and the Texas Rangers and Texas Highway Patrol have all either added it to a list of approved guns, or adopted the pistol outright as a new duty gun for officers. Expect more agencies to go the way of the P320 in the coming weeks and months.
