10 Somewhat Historically Accurate Weapons From ‘Call of Duty WW2’

M1 Garand (American): The semi-automatic, .30 caliber rifle feeds from an 8-round clip. It was the most successful semi-automatic rifle of the war.
Thompson M1A1 Submachine Gun (American): Here we have to nitpick. This famous weapon is called the M1928 Thompson, but it is clearly the M1A1 based on the weapon’s design (triangular rear sights and lack of Cutts Compensator). However, it is still nice to see the “Tommy Gun” in action.
M3 “Grease Gun” (American): Introduced late in the war, this submachine gun fired the same .45 ACP cartridge as the Thompson.

M1903 Springfield (American): Introduced after the Spanish-American War, and greatly influenced by the German K98, this was America’s main battle rifle of the First World War. It saw limited use in Europe in the Second World War, where it was used as a sniper rifle.
Colt M 1911A1 (American): The standard American sidearm for officers, NCOs and paratroopers during World War II, the M1911, also known as the “.45,” had been used in World War I and would remain in use through the Vietnam War. It was just that good.
M1 Bazooka (American): The original American anti-tank weapon was introduced just prior to the outbreak of WWII and saw use across Europe.

MP40 (German): What would a World War II shooter be without the MP40 as the standard German submachine gun. This iconic weapon just says “Nazi soldier” like no other.
StG44 (German): The original “assault rifle” was developed in 1943 and introduced a year later. It was a little too late to make a difference in the war, but it certainly had an impact on small arms design after World War II.
K98 (German): While the MP40 gets all the glory, at least from gamers and movie makers, the truth is that most German soldiers actually were issued with this bolt action rifle. It was a good rifle, but it clearly wasn’t the M1 Garand!

Luger P08 (German): Often just known as “the Luger,” this 9mm pistol is the main German sidearm in the game. It was already widely replaced in World War II by the less iconic, but arguably superior P38 pistol.

Activision’s newly released “Call of Duty WW2” features a robust single-player campaign that allows the player to fight across Europe as a member of the infamous 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One). However, as with most shooters, you may come for the single player but you stay for the multiplayer gaming. This is where the game really shines.

RELATED STORY — Call of Duty WWII: Returning to Franchise Roots and Kicking Ass

One of the things that World War II the perfect setting for multiplayer gameplay are the weapons and equipment. No war in history offered such a true balance. While the Germans may have had the first true “assault rifle” with the StG44 (MP44), the American M1 Garand had been called “The greatest battle implement ever devised” by General George Patton.

“Call of Duty WW2” features divisions that provide players with skills and weapons training as opposed to the typical class system. This allows for more customization with weapons, where infantry can engage in mid- to long-range combat and utilize melee weapons; while armored can mount heavy machine guns as just two examples.

The multiplayer mode includes rare weapons — like the German FG-42 “paratrooper” automatic rifle — to weapons not widely employed by either the Germans or Americans. These include Soviet weapons such as the SVT-40 semi-automatic rifle and the “combat shotgun.” All of this is just to ensure that the in-game arsenal is fully stocked and offers plenty of variation. It may not be historical, but it is certainly about as complete for guns of the era as a game can get.

Scroll through the gallery above for a look at some of the best weapons — both American and German — in “Call of Duty WW2.”
