In the 2007 movie release “The Bucket List,” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, two terminally ill cancer patients decide to break out of the hospital and live their last days to the fullest. They devise a list of goals they wish to accomplish before they kick the bucket. Not to get into a full-on movie review here, but the whole point of the movie struck a nerve in me. Why wait? I soon came up with my own bucket list. It consisted of a few places I would like to visit and enjoy the great outdoors, along with cultures in some of the most remote corners of the world. For my bucket list, this was simple: South America (Peruvian Jungle), a volcano hike, and the Australian Outback.

tk_10_09_blade-tech_nyati_13While executing the first choice on my own bucket list, I was first exposed to Blade-Tech. A few issues ago (March ’09), Jeff Randall wrote about the Blade-Tech PH Magnum Folder. While we were on a RAT Jungle Survival trip in Peru, I had the pleasure of field testing it and witnessing its versatility and function. Blade-Tech’s PH Magnum is the nicest folder I have ever used, period. Imagine my excitement when I had the chance to field test one of their newest designs, the N’yati.

N’yati Specs
Designed as a mid-sized fixed blade utility knife, the N’yati (one of the African names for cape buffalo) is light for a 10-3/8-inch long knife. The length of the blade is 5 inches with a cutting surface of 4-5/8 inches. The blade thickness is 5/32 inch. Width of the blade is about 1-5/16 inches. Weight of the knife is right around 8 oz., with a 4.5 oz. Kydex sheath. As with the PH Magnum, Crucible S30V is the blade material of choice for the Blade-Tech N’yati. Known for its corrosion resistance and toughness, S30V steel is much more resistant to chipping and breaking in applications that may encounter side loading. Over the course of about two months in the Australian Outback, I was able to see the many benefits of S30V, especially in the rainforests of Tasmania, where everything is wet. Needless to say, there were no issues with corrosion or blade chipping while being used, even when coming into contact with small pebbles, bone and teeth.
