If you are a serious student of western arms and armor, you quickly discover most of the “good stuff” is scattered around Europe in various national museums. Whenever I’m reading a book on antique edged weapons, I make a point of noting where the best specimens are located and then do my best to visit that particular institution. The problem is I seem to be having extremely bad luck at finding these museums open to the public.
It all started when a friend told me that the German National Museum in Nuremburg, Germany had an incredible collection of swords and daggers. Naturally, I made a point of scheduling a few hours to visit the museum on my next trip to the IWA trade show. What I found was a sign saying “closed for renovation.”
